Durability, reliability and build quality are the soul of Italian technology — with PV Magazine

Michele Torri, founder and CEO of Torri Solar, tells pv magazine Italia that he is in favour of a Made in EU requirement only under certain conditions. “For us, Made in EU cannot be limited to simple final assembly in Europe: it must mean real industrial value generated locally, with clear criteria on supply chain, traceability, production responsibility and continuity over time”, says Torri.
According to the entrepreneur, the Italian supply chain has a “culture of making products” that is profoundly different from non-EU industrial models. “Italian manufacturing, and in particular that linked to engineering and the energy product, is historically oriented towards durability, reliability and build quality, not to the logic of minimum cost or rapid replacement”, Torri maintains.
Torri nonetheless considers Made in EU an opportunity, especially with clear rules. “Torri positions itself uniquely: not as an alternative to the mainstream product simply because it is made in Italy, but as a distinct category, focused on mechanical resistance, system safety and continuity of performance over the long term”.
“Public tenders and incentive mechanisms should include more advanced technical criteria: requirements for robustness, fire safety, inspectability, long-term reliability and construction models that reduce the operational risk of systems”, says Torri, who then calls for structural support for industrial investments oriented towards patents and product innovation.
Torri states that, for 2026, he wants to consolidate the growth of Italian production, introducing among other things the X-Core² panel to the Italian market. Production capacity is currently around 80 MW per year. “We will introduce a further electroluminescence system directly at the stringing stage, which will complement the two checks already present on the line, with the aim of eliminating the critical issues linked to the silicon circuit and further raising quality standards”, declares Torri.
“We see n-Type as the most solid industrial base available today, while solutions such as xBC may find space in segments where quality and efficiency are truly valued. Perovskite represents an area of great technological interest, but before becoming relevant it will have to demonstrate stability, durability and certified reliability in the real world”.
According to Torri, the Prisma 4.0 construction model maximises module safety and longevity: “panels three times more robust and eight times more hail-resistant than the mainstream product and the reference IEC requirements. The same philosophy as the patented X-Core² technology that redistributes the load applied to the panel up to 5 times”.
